The AI Readiness Checklist
Before you invest in AI, audit whether your business is actually ready. This checklist covers the five things that decide whether an AI project ships and creates value — or stalls after the demo: data, infrastructure, talent, use cases, and governance.
Work through it below, then take the interactive assessment for a scored readiness picture and a prioritized next step.
The 5-dimension AI readiness checklist
1Data
- Your key data is accessible, not locked in silos
- Data is reasonably clean, labelled, and documented
- Clear ownership and permissions for the data AI will use
- You know which data you legally can and cannot use for AI
2Infrastructure
- Compute (cloud or on-prem) can run AI workloads
- AI can integrate with your core systems and data pipelines
- Security and access controls extend to AI tools and data
- A path exists to move a model from prototype to production
3Talent & change
- Teams have (or can quickly build) basic AI fluency
- At least one person is accountable for AI outcomes
- Leadership actively backs AI, beyond curiosity
- The organization can adapt workflows, not just add a tool
4Use cases
- You have a shortlist of specific, high-value use cases
- Each use case ties to a measurable business outcome
- The top use case is scoped small enough to ship in weeks
- You've ruled out 'AI for its own sake' projects
5Governance
- A basic AI acceptable-use policy exists
- You can assess and monitor AI model risk
- Compliance obligations (e.g. EU AI Act) are understood
- There's a plan for what happens when AI gets something wrong
Checked most boxes? You're likely ready to pilot. Gaps in two or more dimensions? Fix those first — the scored assessment will tell you which matter most.
From checklist to a scored readiness plan
A checklist tells you where you stand. AIDOLS' free interactive assessment turns that into a readiness score by dimension and a prioritized roadmap — so you know exactly which gaps to close before investing, not after.
Governance is one of the five dimensions; if that's your weak spot, the AI Governance Maturity Model goes deeper on where you stand and what to fix.
AI readiness: common questions
An AI readiness checklist is a structured set of criteria you use to audit whether your organization is prepared to deploy AI successfully, typically across five dimensions: data, infrastructure, talent, use-case clarity, and governance. It turns a vague question — 'are we ready for AI?' — into a concrete list of things to verify, so you can find and close the gaps that most often derail AI projects before you invest.
